PAINTING WITH PURPOSE
Role
As a social justice fellow at the Hillel Center for Jewish Life, Amalya directed a semester long, weekly collaboration between students at the University of Maryland and William Wirt Middle School.
The Project
When you contribute to beautifying your space, you love it more. The goal of this project was to improve the quality of the school day for William WIrt students by helping them hand paint ceiling tiles for the school's front lobby.
The 6th grade group painted abstract ceiling tiles. Students learned about depth, shading and pointillism. Amalya designed the project to encourage participation from both young art enthusiasts and those with less experience. At the beginning of the lesson, Amalya taught students about pointillism and using shading to create a sense of depth. The UMD team pre-outlined the amorphous shapes on the ceiling tiles and painted together with the 6th graders.
outcome
Students were excited to learn pointillism technique. All three groups created beautiful and successful works.
